This idea came about after much thought and utilization of the ideation process. All team members have an interest in gardening and have an appreciation for Mother Earth. We recognize global issue of food availability, especially for future generations. According to Lester Brown, president of the Earth policy research centre in Washington, "We are entering a new era of rising food prices and spreading hunger. Food supplies are tightening everywhere and land is becoming the most sought-after commodity as the world shifts from an age of food abundance to one of scarcity." (Vidal, “UN warns of looming worldwide food crisis in 2013”). In order to succeed in overcoming this issue it is important to not only provide food but it must also be nutritious in order to overcome famine and malnutrition.

In a report conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation, “There is a need to contribute to sustainable use of resources by reducing over-consumption, shifting to nutritious diets with a lower environmental footprint and reducing food losses and waste throughout the food chain.” (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation, “The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2012”) Urban Mist offers an innovative solution in offering organizations aeroponic gardens which can be used in an urban setting.

Urban Mist provides:

  • Easy to implement technology

  • Nutritious food in a minimal setting

  • Offers a wide variety of fresh produce

  • Requires a low amount of resources

  • Higher crop yields (in comparison to traditional farming methods)

  • Premium exotic produce in addition to basic (including winter) produce

  • Constant, sustainable availability to fresh ingredients results in healthier living.

“There remain enormous challenges to achieve it at the global and regional scale but it is important that countries are realising that they need to tackle food security in the long term rather than food shortage in the short term.” (The British Geographer, “Food Security and Strategies to Alleviate Food Shortage”) Urban Mist tackles this challenge through providing a longterm solution to the global issue by starting regionally.

We believe that our aeroponic gardens can be easily implemented into any environment. Currently, we are targeting urban settings because it is in these types of environments which have a lot of impact on the environment. Our aeroponic gardens have minimal impact on the environment while achieving maximum output in a small environment. This system design is more effective than traditional farming methods because it requires less effort than traditional farming methods while yielding higher quality.
